CIMIEZ
MUSEUM OF ARCHEOLOGY
Opened
in 1989, its illustrates "CERENEMUM's", as well
as, the Alpes-Maritimes area's life and history with
exhibits of ancient pottery, monnies, jewelry, sculptures,
engravings, and animated showcases. A must for first

MUSEUM
OF ART AND HISTORY
(Massena museum)
Sumptuous
first empire decoration, furniture, oil-paintings, doors,
entrance ways, and paneling coming from the "château
de Lucien Bonaparte" in govone (Piémont). Also
includes religious art, arms, porcelaine, stoneware,
european and oriental jewelry, Nice and european original
paintings, regional historical artifacts, aristocratic
attire, regional furniture and ancient marquetry from local
craftsmen.

MUSEUM
OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORY ART
Emphasis
is given to the 1960-70 art movements, the New Realists and
Pop Art creators. Its collection includes works from Arman,
César, Raysse, Klein, Niki de Saint-Phalle, Christo,
Tinguely, Villeglé, Hains, Rotella, Dufrêne, Warhol,
Lichtenstein, Oldenbourg, Wesselman, and many others.

MUSEUM
OF ASIAN ARTS
This
museum, the only one which was built in Europe by Kenzo
TANGE, opens to the public on the 17th October 1998. Its
architectural conception is symbolic. It gathers ancient
collections which are portraying the diversity and richness
of the traditions of Asian civilisations.

ANATOLE
JAKOVSKY INTERNATIONAL NAIVE ART MUSEUM
Donated
to Nice by Mr. and Mrs Anatole Jakovsky and open to the
public since 1982, this original museum is found in the
former summer resort of the parfumer Coty. A collection
tracing naive art's world progression starting from the 18th
century.

FINE
ARTS MUSEUM
The
museum displays its vast collections, wich are going from
the eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries (Italian
seicento, french eighteenth century : Van Lou, Natoire ,
Fragonard) in a magnificient residence, erected in1878 by
the princess Kojchoubey. An important panorama of the french
nineteenth century is therein given Bastien-Lepage,
Bashkeirkeff, Carpeaux, Chéret, Rodin, impressionism and
post-impressionism : Boudin, Monet, Vuillard, Van Dongen.

PHOTOGRAPHY
AND PICTURE THEATER
This
theatre is aimed at welcoming and offering photographic
exhibitions, symposiums and conferences. Five exhibition
rooms offer an opportunity to exhibit all
trends, from photojournalism to plastic photo, from
"straight photography" to digital picture:
portraits, landscapes, reports and applied photography. One
can find
theoretical and practical training courses, a documentation
centre, a multimedia computer network, a bookshop, a
photo-coffee....

FRANCISCAN
MUSEUM AND CIMIEZ MONASTARY
Located
in a 17th century convent covered with frescos, the museum
evokes the Franciscan way of life from the 18th century to
modern day. Free entrance to the church (15th-17th century),
where visitors can admire documents and works of art, such
as, three paintings by Louis Brea, a large gilded wood
baroque alter piece with a fallen Jesus and a Seraphic Cross
( 1477 ) located in the square. Recommanded for church
lovers.

NATURAL
HISTORY MUSEUM
Composed
of four rooms dedicated to the study of birds, fungi,
mineralogy, and geology. Use of natural settings and fossils
to retrace our planet's history since its origin. An
important natural science library is at the disposition of
the public. Feel free to ask for permission.

MATISSE
MUSEUM
The
Matisse Museum a magnificent 17th century Italian villa with
distinctive red walls decorated with trompe l'oeil stands on
a hill just above the center of Nice in the heart of an
olive grove close to the Hotel Regina where Matisse lived.
The park and nearby ruins were part of the ancient Roman
City of Cemenelum, now known as Cimiez. The museum,
modernized and expanded in 1993, now consists of the
original 17th century villa and a sleek and modern adjoining
structure that is partially underground.
The
museum's collection is made up with the works donated by the
Matisse himself who lived in Nice from 1917 to 1954; his
heirs ; and with works lent by the State. The visitor will
discover Matisse's evolution from his early student copies
to his mature work.

MARK
CHAGALL MUSEUM
Located
in the heart of a Mediterranean garden , the museum has a
permanent exhibition of Chagall's outstanding paintings, his
stained-glass windows which decorate the concert hall and a
mosaic that Chagall created especially for the building.
Also presented are a mixture of Chagall's gouaches,
preparatory sketches, engravings, lithographs, art books, as
well as, major works acquired or donated to the museum's
collection after Chagall's death in 1985.

NAVAL
MUSEUM
Old
sailors never die-they can always be found in original naval
museums like this one, where ancient arms, navigatiion
instruments, scale models, boats, engravings, and paintings
are displayed in the Bellanda Tower, a historical monument,
overlooking the sea.

PREHISTORIC
MUSEUM OF TERRA AMATA
This
prehistoric elephant hunter's camp, discovered in the center
of Nice, has been marvelously reconstructed showing the
evolution of the excavation with plaster castings and a
recreated Acheulian living quarter dating around 400,000 BC.

LASCARIS
PALACE MUSEUM
Home
of the Lascaris family (Vintimillia), this Genovan style
palace units a magnificent 17th residence with ornaments
from the 18th century. The entrance hall is decorated with
the Lascaris coat arms, a monumental staircase, grandiose
public rooms with fresco cover edarchways, 17th and 18th
century furniture, and flemish tapestries. Also found are
exhibits of regional art and popular traditions, a
magnificent 18th century pharmacy with its original
woodwork, and a collection of vases and tripods.

VIEUX
LOGIS PRIORY
This
13th room manor, a scrupulous reconstruction of a rural
priory, is the work of the Reverend Father Alfred Lemerre, a
Dominician friar, born in 1868 in Roubaix. It contains
regional articles and furniture from the 14th, 15th, and
16th centuries.

An
exceptional presentation of Raoul Dufy's paintings (le Havre
1877-Forcalquier 1953), water colors, designs, engravings,
ceramics, tapestries, textile stencil-plates, etc.

MUSEUM-GALLERY
ALEXIS AND GUSTAV ADOLF MOSSA
An
important father and son collection. Alexis Mossa (
1844-1926 ) was the originateur of Nice's carnaval
procession and a remarkable water-color landscape painter.
His son, Gustav Adolph (1883-1971 ) continued in his
father's steps and invented his own universal symbolism.

ARSON
Superb
18th century dwelling inserted in a vast architectural
strucutre decorated with pebbles. Villa Arson houses an
international art research pilot school, resident
artists, and a national center for contemporary art. This
institution, controlled by the Ministry of Culture, also
organizes temporary art exhibitions, conferences, lectures,
and publishes catalogs.
